Hello my friends, I wish you well - and I hope you didn’t lose all your Spring flowers and your fruit tree buds. I dug out my long winter coat and still ‘froze‘ every time I ventured out the door. The Sun God triumphed once again today so I ventured out to check on the damage done by the cold. I was eager to find out the bad news - but dreaded it too. The tame plums cloud of white blossoms have turned brown - but the wild plums were fine - they were cagey enough to sleep awhile longer . More peach buds than I could ever imagine are still looking pretty good - some have little green peaches inside, some look strange—maybe sterile flowers. If every flower bore fruit the young trees would be reduced to splinters! Blueberries weren’t blooming yet, nor cherries. Rhubarbs still showing fat green balls - soon to grow into the makings of Rhubarb custard pie. We’ll see if my resolution to swear off sugar holds up! I believe Richards truck will be best to haul even the small amount of "barn dirt" needed to ensure plenty of fat, juicy stalks to use and to freeze. The different types of onions set out late last Fall are looking great- - but weeds are trying to take them .I sat down by the wide row and pulled out the chickweed, dandelions, etc. that had turned the row solid green. I wasn’t sure if they’d be more protected down in the weeds, but pulled a few large clumps and saw how dark the pine needle mulch was and decided it would draw heat from the sun. Thanks for visiting me via e mail and I’m looking for some needed recipes. askgranny@juno.com or 1417 Lakeview Terr.
