Clarksville, Tennessee and the Internet.

Yes, you can get there from here.

Internet Service providers come in an assortment of flavors: Online services, National Service Providers, Regional Services Providers, Job/Work related services, and BBS style service.

Any User comments, or information provided by the ISPs themselves is not certified to be true by Clarkweb.

Online Services.

AOL America off-line. We will not discuss AOL, save your horror stories, it's common knowledge. If you actually want to praise AOL, please send e-mail, we'll post your letter.(Note: this notice has been up for a LONG time....going on 18 months..)

Compuserve. Compuserve has pretty good service for the c-ville area; at 28.8 connection speeds, and hardly ever a connection delay. If Compuserve is going to be your ISP, do NOT bother with anything other than their unlimited connection rate; otherwise the premium charges will eat you alive. The only drawback with compuserve: They limit their callers! they will only sign up new accounts if they can support them. What a concept! Cost is around $19.95 / month, I beleive.

Prodigy. I have no experience with prodigy, at least not in this state or decade.. Anyone have anything to share?

MSN. The Microsoft network maintains a 2400 baud access point in Clarksville; to get 28.8 or ISDN, you have to call Nashville. Obviously, not a good choice for internet access in Clarksville. If you are able to access Nashville, it is $19.95 for unlimited access, and I do not beleive that ISDN access costs any more; I could be wrong.

National ISP's

Somebody else is going to have to send information on national ISP's, as I have never dealt with them.

Regional ISP's

Bellsouth. Nearest access point is in Nashville, but if you get past that hurdle, they charge $19.95 / month for unlimited access (billed with your normal phone bill), Never a busy signal, 33.6 connection speed. What more can you ask.

Long Distance Companies: Every Long Distance company provides Internet. Each one charges $19.95 / month. None of them has a local dial-up in Clarksville. If this changes, tell me so I can note it.

Datatek.Datatek WAS a great choice, up until November; at that time, they told their members that it was just not cost effective to maintain local dial-up's in the Clarksville region, and withdrew to Nashville.

USIT. US Internet. In an effort to actually see if this service was wothwhile, I signed up for an account. The cost is about $20 a month, as can be expected; you are given 10MB of space, of which 1MB can be used as a personal web page; the other 9MB is presumably for e-mail storage. USIT supplies you with a "buffet suite" of internet apps, including netscape, a IRC client, a usenet news reader, a e-mail client, etc....pretty much everything you need.

I would highly recommend USIT for the new or casual user; however, slow connection speeds and a distressing tendency to cut off a connection would prevent me from suggesting a power user use it. However, they do also provide 64k ISDN service, at a reasonable rate; and the down time seems to be reducing.

Compunet. Another local means of getting on the internet, seems to be business oriented, though.

Midwest internet. I have heard they provide local access, but have seen no evidence of it.

www.clarksville.com Probably the most professional and technically competent of the local providers. The owner / Head Tech of this service has been in the field for a LONG time, and gets rave reviews for competentcy. From the Admins: "We do not charge a set up fee, and charge $20.00 a month for unlimited access.  We do not do outside advertising but do offer a 5% discount off of our customers invoice for each referral they give us.  They continue receiving the same 5% off of their bill each month their referral is active.  That has worked out well for us, and I believe our customers appreciate this "rebate".
Our ISDN lines will be in on April 30th - after a 4 month wait!!!!
We do web hosting for local retailers and offer free personal web sites for our customers.  We also offer secure on-line transactions for local and out of states vendors (i.e., Service Merchandise, Daystar, Texas Boot, etc.) on our commerce site."

I am considering trying out Clarksville.com Dedicated ISDN...I'll let you know how it works out.

Mid-South ConNEcTions The latest to be added to the Clarksville ISp listings."We are the only Local ISP that supports 56k with k56flex technology. Also, in the last four months we have had no busy signals".

if someone uses them as an ISP, please let me know how they rate.

Job/Work/School related Internet.

Please, let me know if your place of daytime activity gives its activists Internet Access, so your co-activists can know about it.

BBS Internet Service Providers.

Pixellation. The only thing I know about Pixel, is that it does provide Internet Access, and it is local, and it is, or started out as, a BBS.
