I haven't updated this in a while, have I?
Gnotella has turned out to be my client of choice; Unfortunately, they have stopped making it, and the home page is dead and gone.
Do Not Despair!
On or about the end of march, 2002, I did a search for a replacement Gnutella client; My criteria was:
No Spyware. It sucks. If the company making the client offers it, they suck also. you can't trust them.
Has to have resuming, and ability to get the same file from different machines.
Has to be able to query against multiple clients; I wouldn't put it past the Evil Empiretm to put bogus clients out there...and I'm pretty sure they have.
No Spyware. See Criteria #1.
Guess what I came up with? Gnotella! bummer, huh? Limewire was a close 2nd, but hey.
Since this distressing event, I realized that there was no consistent place to get the Gnotella client.
So here.
the last: Gnotella 1.2beta1
(has a chat client, all the great features the other ones are starting to come
out with) However, it crashes on Win2k; your mileage may vary.
The 1.05 build (I think) this one is stable,
multi-source (but non-concurrent) downloads.
You MAY have to install the 1.05 build before you can install the 1.2b1 build,
but I'm not 100% sure; mileage may vary.
XoloX
If you are forced to use a Socks-based firewall to get to the Internet, you
are going to want to use XoloX; the legalities of it are problematic, and
installing it isn't real easy, but it actually work really great; concurrent,
multi-threaded downloads, i think.
XOLOX 678k (check the readme before
installing)
Here is the Dec 27th, 2000 Gnutella Host list in straight Gnutella format, and zipped in order to use this, install Gnutella, and either place the gnutella.net file or the contents of the zip file in your Gnutella install directory. then start Gnutella. That's pretty much all there is to it, and if it doesn't work, there is probably something wrong with your system, your not connected to the net, etc. It can take a LONG time.
We've also added a download for Gnotella v0.70, a great Win-Compatible Gnutella clone; it supports skins, and is really super easy to use. great for all you Napster fans.
Even better is BearShare it's really almost too easy to use, and is the most stable P2P so far..except for our top secret not-yet-released one, of course... get BearShare 2.05 from our server
If that's too hard, or you are just not
able to get it to work... try
