Port Royal Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down..........(My Comment)

It fell.
On Friday, June 2nd at 2:00PM CST, the strain apparently grew to great.

While I was there, 2 news helicopters, and at least 50 carloads of "mourners" drove by.
PIC00144.jpg (86588 bytes)There is a petition being circulated at the bridge site to try and get local government to quickly rebuild the bridge; hopefully, someone from the organizers of the petition will send us a e-mail to post here, as well.

(BTW, NBC, go ahead and steal our pictures all you want.)

Due to the recent flooding, apparently during the day of June 10th, 1998, the center support of the Port Royal Covered bridge was washed out. Pics:(click on 'em)

PIC00120.jpg (98340 bytes) Taken from just to the left of the port royal side entrance, you can see some evidence of the break

My Comment on the whole, sorry mess.

This Bridge washes away frequently. This tells me something. It's a bad place for this sort of bridge.

My solution: when you rebuild this thing, run some hidden I-Beams or steel cable; It might get banged up, but won't get washed away.
