Will of Jeremiah Jack proved 11 Aug 1785 names daughter Elisabeth Pierce & the heirs of her body by Elisha Pierce.
JV Thompson Journals Vol. 6, p 398-399: "110 S. Fairmont Ave at 4:50 & arrived there at 5:03 PM & was ushered in by Cousin Dr John W. Worrell in person. He is a virile robust, vigorous man of 66 yrs about 5 1/2 ft high with full clean shaven face, a good head & countenance. I told him my mission & he got out a small wooden tray box in which he had his family record papers & going over them, he came to twelve pages clamped together which he let me have, from which to copy such as I wished & return to him with a carbon of what I copy.
Speaking of "Bet" Jack, he said in her race for life to escape from the Indians, she shed or dropped off her petticoat which was impeding her running & the slight delay occasioned in their stopping to pick it up enabled her to gain enough to get inside the stockade with them close at her heels & thus escaped. Going over the list of her children & coming to the twins born in 1772, he said that her husband, Elisha Peairs had gone off to the wars a year or two, leaving her & returning, came to her & asked if she was married & upon stating that her husband had gone off, he asked her if she didn't want to get married again & she said "Certainly not to such as you". He then made himself known & the twins were the result of their reunion. He also gave me to copy a brief genealogical tree of three of her children. I left at 6:25 & reached the Hotel at 7 PM.
Barbara Ann & Robert Gordon Wilson, wilsonr@songs.sce.com send the following history: "Elizabeth JACQUES was born in 1735 in Yorkshire, England. One source indicates that the date of birth was 1730. One source indicates that she was born in what is now West Virginia. She resided at her home about 1750 in the area of the Conocheague and Potomac Rivers, Washington Co., Maryland.55 She lived somewhere between Harpers Ferry and Washington DC. She died in 1814 in Pennsylvania.12,64,65,9 She possibly died in 1814. She was buried in 1814 in Dunbar Township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. Elizabeth is buried with her husband Elisha in the Laurel Hill United Presbyterian Church churchyard. The first churchyard was laid out in 1772 at the Samuel Work farm, and was moved in 1782 several miles away. Jonathan Hill owned some land on Laurel Hill. This is generally located between Brownsville and Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. She was also known as Betsy Jack. The surname is often spelled Jacks.
She was a robust and hardy woman. She was of English blood and was born in
that country. She retained her native brogue all through her life. It is likely that her surname was changed to Jack in later generations."
