Or go back

ANYWAY. I'm thinking about doing my own FREENET client based on the last sandworm (FROST-WOT-050903) source; as I have about 300 projects going on right now, who knows if I'll actually do it.
However, if I do, this would be the target feature list:
encrypted messaging (actually already in the source)

No XML. It's Evil. (actually already in the source)

No HTML. It's Eviler. (actually already in the source)

Dynamic boardlist update (grab a list of boards being posted to)
SPAMless boards (maybe, my idea might not work)
Actually, I have quite a few ideas on how to make a more file-sharer friendly client; these may just be dead ends, but until I try I won't know.

It's not going to be very easy to figure this out. there seem to be multiple groups trying to push different versions, each one slinging mud at the others.

I know I haven't really used FROST much since last year, and never really concerned myself with the code, as some of the activity taking place was so obviously illegal, it HAD to be secure; pretty much that certified anything that Jan-Thomas (Jantho) wrote as safe from spyware.

So, what was the last FROST that Jantho wrote? I've got a pretty extensive collection of frost versions; here is a partial list, available for download, with no changes by me except to reflect the JAR file date in the file name.

frost_010529.zip frost_010714.zip frost_011202.rar
frost_011214.zip frost_020114.zip frost_020119.zip
frost_020712.zip frost_021101.zip frost_030203_fec.zip
frost_030315.zip frost_030329.zip (last non-WOT) frost-20030126-Z-2-pre6.zip
frost-20030126-Z-3-pre3.zip frost-20030126-Z-4-pre2.zip frost-wot-050903.zip

These are the version as near as I can tell that are missing from the FROST sourceforge site. the versions before, and after this are available for download.

According to the files, version 010714 was the last version that ONLY Jantho worked on. after that, it was:

Jan-Thomas Czornack <jantho@users.sourceforge.net>
Thomas Mueller <thm2001@users.sourceforge.net>
Jim Hunziker <landtuna@users.sourceforge.net>
Benoit Laniel <nels@pgroupe.net>

It stayed that way, apparently, up until 021101 when it became

Jan-Thomas Czornack <jantho@users.sourceforge.net>
Thomas Mueller <thm2001@users.sourceforge.net>
Jim Hunziker <landtuna@users.sourceforge.net>
Benoit Laniel <nels@pgroupe.net>
Stefan Majewski <e9926279@stud3.tuwien.ac.at>

When did Jantho stop being involved? I remember exchanging e-mails with him, he wasn't really wanting to be involved anymore; graduating university, new baby, etc; according to the website, it was 2003-01-20 when "zlatinb" started working on the FROST code; prior to this, I think we can safely say that Jantho was the primary coder. I think the real question here, which only Jantho could answer, is "when did Jantho stop looking over all the code before it was official?"  I just can't tell. If you use the wayback machine to look at old versions of the FROST page, you can see that Jantho pretty much dropped out of site for a while; I think maybe then?

So my short term conclusion, pending the code review which I instigated by a 3rd party, is that 2003-02-03 is the last time that Jantho encouraged people to get the new build.

Anything else I have is just paranoia based, or based on things that people claim is a problem; I know that XML is a "dynamic" language, capable of performing hidden redirects; whether someone could insert messages in the NEW frost that would cause peoples IP's to be exposed, I just don't know. I do know that if I was doing anything in FROST that was illegal, I wouldn't want XML to be involved. None of the above downloadable versions have XML.
