As the plurality of interested parties have opted for a setting that begins in a polar region, I suggest the following:
Arctic area between Anatis and Varan, somewhere near the pole.
In a mountainous region of an ice-covered island there, a deep valley with several volcanoes around it. The valley can be up to about 100 miles in length and about half that breadth, with climate ranging from sub-tropical in the lowest portions to sub-Arctic as one asends the hillsides leading from it.
Of course there is a lost civilization there. It has many foes who dwell in the extensive labyrinths of passages and caverns in the surrounding mountains and beneath the valley floor.
Portals are located in the ruins of an Altiss outpost to the south, somewhere in the north end of the valley, and in a complex of caverns....perhaps.
So, who's for doing a map and developing the environment?

Might need one more volcano in the south central area.
I assume that the scale is 10 miles across a hex. In such case, this place needs a single cottage in a hex with a village, several to indicate a larger community.
the very center of the place, and a stream-river would be in order here too, hot springs and rain making it rise and sflow northwards. It would be in a light-green lowest-level portion of the valley, and the climate there would be Mediterranean, not cold temperate perhaps:)
